SUSSEX
& KENT YOGA ME/CFS GROUP
A yoga class for ME sufferers has been running in conjunction with the support group since 1995. We meet once a fortnight at 2.00pm on a Monday afternoon. The venue is a community centre in Church Road, Hove. Each class tends to comprise of three sections. We begin with a period of relaxation, with emphasis placed on deepening the breath. This can achieve calmness and greater peace of mind. Next we have the physical activity. Mostly the exercises are performed lying down on a mat; occasionally we sit on a chair or stand, but each movement is entirely optional. Our teacher has gained a considerable knowledge of ME and emphasises that each member of the group should attempt no more than they feel capable of doing. The session closes with another period of relaxation, by which time most members of the class would be content to remain in a state of rest for the remainder of the afternoon. Anyone interested in trying yoga is very welcome to come along to the class. Obviously, it will not be appropriate for everyone, but many people have found that over a period of time their health has started to improve. Contact Jonathan through Sussex ME/CFS Society.
SUSSEX & KENT NETWORKING LIST
Kate operates a networking list for members who would value contact with others by phone or letter. It often helps to be in touch with others in a similar situation and with shared interests. The list prints only first names and telephone numbers. If you would like to be in contact with other group members contact Kate through Sussex ME/CFS Society.
SUPPORT FOR SUSSEX & KENT PARENTS WITH ME/CFS
We have formed a small network of local parents who have ME/CFS and who want to share support, advice and information with each other. To join the network you will need to become a member of the Sussex ME/CFS Society and, as well as getting all the benefits of this, you will receive the following: A list of network members willing to phone, meet with or write to other parents § A chance to be on the network list yourself § Regular letters keeping you in touch with other parents § A news-sheet giving up-to-date information, particularly useful for those parents who find it difficult to talk on the phone for long. It is hoped that parents joining the network will at some point be able to take part themselves on a self-help basis, although it is recognised that some parents will be too ill or busy 'parenting' to do much As the network develops it may be possible to hold meetings where members can meet face to face. The network could also have a campaigning role in the future as there are many issues to be highlighted, such as the lack of practical support for parents with ME/CFS. Contact Mandy or Kate via the Sussex ME/CFS Society.
YOUNG PEOPLE'S ME/CFS GROUP IN SUSSEX & KENT
The young people's group was established about five years ago in an attempt to deal with the separate issues that young people and their families face. It was set up by Hilary Tandy, a mother and teacher, who had two children with ME and who had faced many problems common to families with children in the education system. Local families were put in touch with each other and met at social events. For the last two years, Hilary has also worked with the national charity AYME as Education Advisor and there is now a strong link between the Sussex ME Society and AYME who provide essential support and regional contacts. By providing under 21's with both local and national support, our young people and their families are receiving the very best information and encouragement. Contact Kerryn through Sussex ME/CFS Society.
EGROUP
The society operates a members only email group which links up all those with internet access. The system enables members to share news and views and be kept up-to-date with local and national developments. Contact Colin through the Sussex ME/CFS Society.
POSTAL LIBRARY
Susan and Lyndis operate a postal library that has a large selection of books and tapes on ME/CFS and related subjects. The library list includes several self help books written by specialist doctors.
CHRISTIAN GROUP
Carole co-ordinates a Christian fellowship for those with ME/CFS who's faith is important to them. Contact Carole through the Sussex ME/CFS Society.
